Our story

Friarshawmuir isn’t just the name of our home, its become the meaning and title to our story. The story of creating and living our best life. To us, Friarshawmuir is a collection of things that make us happy, things that we love. Its our happy ending to giving up the things that feel safe and secure in pursuit of true happiness and following our dreams. We’re not lottery winners, we are not super heroes. We are just a family that one day said “we need something different, something true to us.” So step into our story to enjoy the things we love and even find out how you can start to live your best life too!

Our Accommodation

The Studio

The Sleepery

The Sleepery is attached to our home and is the place where the previous owner studied and painted the landscape of the Scottish Borders. If you are looking for cosy comfort the Sleepery has it. It has an antique French double bed covered with an Alpaca duvet. There is a small self contained kitchen area and a private bathroom with walk in shower.

Currently Closed Until Further Notice

Shepherd Hut

This Shepherd hut is situated on the edge of our private and secluded woodland. It has a wood burning stove, simple table, small veranda and a comfortable double bed with views over the valley. The only thing to disturb you will be the owls, woodpecker and pheasants who were there before us.

Shepherd Hut

This Shepherd hut is situated in the private and secluded woodland. It has a wood burning stove, simple table, and a comfortable double bed along with single bunks. It has views across the valley. As with Snowdrop the only thing to disturb you will be the owls, woodpecker and pheasants who were there before us. You may get an occasional glimpse of the badger and fox who walk through the woodland at night.

Our Workshops

"I hate it when I lose things at work like my pens, papers, life, sanity and dreams"

Visiting Friarshawmuir for the first time was the catalyst that sent us on a path that would see us shutting the door on our corporate based work life. At first even we thought we were crazy.

However, 5 years on we have learned a thing or two about living your best life, being happy in a new challenging lifestyle and making it work.
Whether you want to live on a smallholding or manage your own piece of woodland, start your own rural business or move to a wild remote place and run a guest house then our one and two day workshops will set you on your way.

Through challenging your thinking of what you currently hold on to as true, the workshop will free you up to think differently. Once you can do this we can work out how to make it all happen, the timescales and what you need to do when your time at Friarshawmuir ends.

Relaxed, fun and inclusive our two day workshop includes accommodation in one of our delightful shepherd's huts or in The Sleepery and we provide a homemade, plant based breakfast and lunch.
The workshop is strictly limited to max 6 people.

Call us now on 08006771656 to get the dates of the next workshop.

Our Experiences

To add the finishing touches to your visit we have created the following experiences for you to enjoy. They are of course, as always, based on things we love.

Famous Five Picnic

With lashings of homemade ginger beer (or diet coke if you prefer) we will deliver your traditional picnic hamper at a time set by you to the door or your shepherds hut or in our lovingly created woodland clearing complete with picnic table chairs and of course a blanket if you prefer to loll on the grass.
A retro record player will be provided for you to enjoy or just lie back and listen to the symphony of bird song.

Black Beauty Experience

Did you love Black Beauty as a kid? Maybe you love horses but have never had the chance to learn more about them. Perhaps your are a bit intimidated by our equine friends but would love to conquer this?
During this 1: 1 experience you will be carefully guided depending on your previous experience with horses. Work towards leading and directing the horse over and around obstacles from the ground to working "at liberty" (fancy way of saying no ropes on the horse, just how they filmed lots of Black Beauty).
Take the whole session at your own pace and finish up with tea, coffee and of course, cake!

Friarshawmuir Tour

Take a guided tour around Friarshawmuir meeting our animal residents and perhaps sightings and evidence of our abundant wildlife. From Bronson our rescued cow, Elvis our gorgeous alpaca to evidence of our nocturnally vocal woodland owls you will be guided around this special environment.
Gather a few spring flowers on your way to decorate your shepherd's hut, forage for field mushrooms in Autumn, collect a pile of pinecones for winter decorations or enjoy freshly picked brambles, wild strawberries and apples in late summer.
On a clear day we have panoramic views all the way to the Scottish-English Border and your guide will point out landmarks of interest.
Finish your tour with a Friarshawmuir high tea served in the woodland clearing.

1:1 Introduction to yoga and/ or meditation.

If you have always wanted to find out more about one or both of these ancient and wonderful practices enjoy the benefit of a 1:1 introductory session either on our woodland yoga platform or in our chill out area in The Stables.
Covering the basics in a relaxed, fun and easy to understand way this experience introduces you to a whole new level of chill out and well being. You need no prior experience, double joints or indeed any lycra to enjoy this session.
Your experience will cater to you as an individual and in the sanctuary that is Friarshawmuir

1:1 Life coaching

Whilst Jane is passionate about all things meditation and yoga Duncan is passionate about the use of language in coaching. He is a Certified Eriksonian Hypnotherapist which is probably not what you think. Through conversation we can explore your ambitions and what is stopping you achieving them if anything. It is a relaxed exploration of your thoughts and aspirations designed for you to focus on your goals and engage others on that journey.

Head for Selkirk, Scotland

Assuming you are in the centre of Selkirk

head south on the A7 to Hawick. As you pass the filling station and the purple cafe (Fletchers) on the right hand side take a left A699. Follow this past the golf course for about 2 miles until you see a sign for Whitmuir Hall. Turn right into this road. This is TD7 4PZ.

If you are travelling North up the A7

Head for Selkirk. The directions are similar other than turn RIGHT onto the A699 before you get into Selkirk.

If you are travelling down the A68

....from the direction of Edinburgh (another option) drive to St Boswells and turn RIGHT on to the A699. Drive for about 10 minutes until you see the sign for WhitMuir Hall and then turn left into TD7 4PZ. It sounds complicated but if you look on a map it is quite straightforward.

Then go down this road to the T junction and turn right onto a Private Road. After 40m turn left onto a track. Follow this track to the very end...you will find FSM.

Had an amazing time on the farm! This was the best place we've stayed on holiday. The room was great and included a kitchenette. The animals were a huge hit for us. The place was super charming and I hope to go back!Alexandra/Florida

You will love this place. Quaint and idyllic, the animals are a delight and we loved the natural surroundings. A trip to Melrose Abbey is not to be missed. Duncan was a great host and we had everything we needed. Hannah

Wonderful bolt hole, fabulous location. Duncan is so friendly and a wealth of knowledge about the area. Being greeted by the lambs in the morning was a lovely surprise! Sonia

Magical spot. We had an amazing time meeting all the animals, using the zip line and being in nature. Duncan and Jane are lovely and we hope to go back.Caitlin

Idyllic is an overused word in the travel industry but I can't think of a better one to describe Duncan and Janes' place. If you want fresh air, terrific views, peace and quiet and the company of some very friendly animals, you won't find better than this. We found a freshly baked loaf of bread waiting for us, and Duncan quickly found half a dozen new-laid eggs for our breakfast. We're sorry we had to leave so soon.

Duncan & Jane's place is absolutely amazing. My husband and I had a brilliant 2 night stay in the sleepery. It's very rural and exactly what we were looking for. Stunning views and plenty of walks both from the farm or from nearby villages. The fresh baked bread for breakfast along with a few other very thoughtful additions really made our stay. Duncan & Jane will go above and beyond to make you feel at home within their home. We can't wait to return soon! Marie
